China Philanthropy Forum

Driven by technological revolution and innovation, philanthropy is witnessing increasingly faster globalization and cross-border integration. The globalization of philanthropy promotes the integration of international philanthropic resources and the optimization of resource allocation. From the perspective of social philanthropy, cross-border integration serves as the potential driving force as well as presents opportunities for philanthropic undertakings in the new era.

It is against such a backdrop that philanthropic undertakings in China have made impressive progress and non-governmental philanthropy is growing to be a major force in social development. At the same time, companies are exploring new models and paths to allow for an organic combination with philanthropy. Nonetheless, philanthropy in China still has to deal with quite a few challenges. For example, the development of philanthropy ecosystem is slow, the management mechanisms of charity organizations are outdated and public awareness of philanthropy and the climate for philanthropy are still at their infancy. The rule of law leaves room for improvement and there is a lack of institutional guarantees and sustainability with respect to philanthropic assistance. In addition, practitioners in the sector need to update their skills and know-how. All these to a certain extent present obstacles to the healthy development of philanthropy in China.

With growing international exchanges between the philanthropic sector in China and its global counterparts, the perspective of international charity organizations on philanthropy in China has changed and the globalization of philanthropy has become an unavoidable topic. What can be done to further promote the development of philanthropy in China? What can government, businesses and charity organizations do to optimize the allocation of resources and achieve virtuous interaction among participants? In the context of the globalization of philanthropy, what can be done to achieve a breakthrough in this sector in China?

“Changes & Sustainability” is the theme of the China Philanthropy Forum 2015. The Forum seeks to promote changes in theory and practice of philanthropy through exchanges and discussions among academicians, practitioners in the sector and other related parties at home and abroad. It also hopes to make use of the opportunity to connect representatives from charity organizations, businesses, government agencies, academia and the media so as to promote the healthy development of the philanthropic sector.
